In his forum Me. Byrne posted the following about a new 3 issues mimi series Star Trek: ROMULANS - SCHISM :

This week I started this, the third and "final" chapter of my Romulans stuff for IDW. This tells the tale of how the Romulans and the Klingons stopped being "pals" some time before the first TREK movie.

Mr. Byrne also posted that for the Romulans omnibus he is going to do an adaptation of the TOS eppisode "Balance of terror". Since I already have some of the Romulans issues and planning on getting this new mini series too, I'm not going to buy the omnibus.

In the recent ECCC it was announced that BOOM! Studios will also be producing a book based on the Sci Fi show “Eureka.” The book, “Eureka 1.5,” will focus on stories that occur between the first and second seasons. The writing of the book will be done by Jonathan Davis.

I'm confused here. I thought that the current Eureka comics are the 1.5 season. Maybe they are talking about a collection of these comic issues.

In the last couple of months Chris Ryall kept hinting about a new Star Trek series that would start in July. According to IDW's former editor Harris, the series will be called Spock: Reflections, and will see David Messina return to his regular writing partners Scott and David Tipton (thanks god that it's not bloody Tichman). The story will apparently be set in the new timeline created by the new movie.

Since last writing here I dropped off my reading list most of the Star Wars series and the Marvel Illustrated series and added Buffy. Star Wars because they are covering too many eras while I'm only interested in the movies characters. Marvel Illustrated due to economics. The price for a single issue was upped to $4 which make the trades paperbacks cheaper. I added Buffy although I disliked the series because the comics are fun and interesting. I needed to trim my reading list because with all the new titles coming up, some of which are listed bellow it was getting out of hand.

IDW's Star Trek plans for the beginning of 2009

I've got three major launch points lined up. The first is in January with the premiere of the very-closely-tied-to-the-movie prequel Star Trek: Countdown. The story for this comes right from the screen writers of the movie and leads up to the opening of the film. There's a LOT of dramatic and action-packed backstory that couldn't make it into the movie but is perfect for a comic book—so don't miss it! It's your first chance to meet the new villain for the movie and get some MAJOR hints as to what the movie is about!
Then in March we're launching a couple of awesome Original Series projects. Crew is by John Byrne and explores a very important bit of business prior to Kirk's taking control of the Enterprise.
Mission's End is by Ty Templeton and Stephen Molnar and it tells the story of the final mission of the original five-year mission, and you know what? THE STATUS QUO CHANGES. That's right, you'll see friendships suffer and crumble as well as really great action. This book is going to lead up to some really big changes for the Original Series franchise.
In April, we're publishing the early anticipated and long-awaited Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan movie adaptation. I'm adapting the screenplay myself and artist Chee who I wrote a mini-series for last year is doing the art. He's an amazing talent! And we've got Chris Ryall editing it.
We're doing it in three chapters and the movie doesn't naturally break into thirds. So the first chapter is about the crew getting ready and Kirk getting honest with himself until he has to take over the ship.The second chapter focuses more personally on the revenge story and the life/death themes of the film. It ends after Kirk has been kicked around by Khan and we get just the faintest glimmer of hope that they might make it out alive.And the third chapter, of course, rises up to the climax of the film and resolves the conflict. It's great stuff and it's an honor to be doing the adaptation.

In the spring, we're doing two Omnibus editions of older STAR TREK comics. Both will collect the Marvel comics runs. The first'll be issues 4-18 of their original series (issues 1-3 were the movie adaptation and are being collected in their own Omnibus later, complete with an all-new STAR TREK II adaptation we're doing. KHAN was the only movie never adapted to comics for some reason, which is even odder since everyone considers it the best TREK movie. We're finally gonna rectify that next summer). The second edition will collect the entirety of their EARLY VOYAGES series.

Answering my question about the 2nd movie adaption Chris Ryall said:

It's being released as a 3-part biweekly miniseries first (in June/July '09), and then will be collected in a book that features all the movie comics in one, yeah. That one's slated for next winter, I believe.

In the TEK WAR comic, the character of Walter Bascom will be portrayed by Mr. Shatner’s likeness. Walter is the head of the Cosmos Detective Agency, and he will be a recurring character. The storyline will loosely follow the original story set out in the original novel: a police officer wrongly convicted of a crime is suddenly released from prison in order to find an enigmatic scientist involved in the drug trade. He does this on behalf of a mysterious benefactor. This will be a classic noir detective story set in the near future. This complete story arc will take place over the first six issues of the project. However, within the pages will be elements that will serve as a key plot points for tale continuation for future volumes. The idea is to create a universe in such a way much like that of the programs. Heroes and Lost: creating compelling detail that carry over from volume to volume as major themes and plot points are peeled back like an onion. (ongoing series).

There are going to be more projects in the "William Shatner presents" line but I'm interested only in the Tek War comics after reading the books.

We use the events that open the television series – i.e the bombing of Caprica – as the frame for this miniseries/ We then go back and explain all the reasons that that happened – not just the treaty violation that we’ve seen in the television series, but we delve deeper into the reasons why the Cylons hate humanity so much. We also show a bit of the early history of the 12 colonies – the good times and the bad. As you can imagine, with twelve disparate societies all interacting there’s a lot of opportunity for rich and complex interactions. And, of course, conflict. But amidst all the conflict, you will get to see at least some happier times for Caprica, though unfortunately, they won't last too long.
Leading the resistance on behalf of humanity falls on the shoulders of new character and Caprica native Ben Tanner, who Ortega described as “an old soldier when the book opens, but we'll also get to see him as a teenager and as he grows into a man and becomes an important part of Galactica history. H has a very full character arc in this series.”
“He ends up being very important to Galactica history,” Nylund agreed. “More than any one character, I’d say he has the most intimate relationship with the Cylons. With regards to the other characters in a television series, we’re careful not to force anything; after all, the events of this first Cylon War happened 40 years before the beginning of the television show. There are one or two of the older characters, however, that we just couldn’t resist including.”
Of course, humanity isn’t alone in the series, as the titular Cylons leading the war have a life much closer to humans in this part of the BSG timeline than they do in the TV show. “Prior to the first Cylon war, robotic companions and servants were fairly common in, at least, Caprican society. Their relationships are pivotal to the events that set in motion the cataclysmic war,” Nylund said. “As a science fiction writer, the robots give me a mirror to reflect present-day societal concerns. They view humanity with a logical and unbiased eye (something we have a hard time doing ourselves). As a storyteller – that’s pure gold.”
Ortega agreed, “And the notion of fully functional, autonomous A.I. is a fascinating one to explore, just in of itself, even without any allegory. But then you mix in that metaphor and deeper meaning. On the human/Cylon note, a strong character like Tanner is the key. Cylons can be all around him, but he’ll be anchoring this tale throughout, with a few surprises along with way, of course.”
We cram decades of wartime action, the disintegration and reuniting of all of humanity and the rise of the new sentient race in four issues – we really want to give our fans their moneys worth,” explained Nyund, who teased explanations for how the twelve colonies united, why robotic life rose up against humanity, how and why the Battlestars came into existence, not to mention “how the heck humanity survived a war against a clearly technologically superior race and how they fracked it all up.”

I've been MIA from here for a while not because I'm not interested in comics anymore but due to loads of work, working on other internet projects and just not being in the mood. Hopefully I'm back and all thanks to news about the upcoming Dresden Files: Storm Front comics. This is the Hrry Dresden book I read and immidiatley fell in love with the character of Harry Dresden. Here are the news from CBR:

Dabel Brothers Publishing announced today that Mark Powers and Ardian Syaf will be the creative team adapting Jim Butcher's Storm Front to comics.
Storm Front is Butcher's very first Dresden Files novel, and follows Harry through the investigation of a double murder committed by the use of black magic.
The first issue of Storm Front ships October 2008.

So far I read only the 1st issue of Welcome to the Jungle and the art was magnificent. So I'm so looking forward to the comics version of Storm Front witht he same artist.

In IDW's Angel: After the Fall, all of the characters who survived the melee that concluded Joss Whedon's TV series have had to find their way in a Los Angeles cast into hell. As befit his character, the vampire Spike seemed to have it all at the start -- he was set up in a certain Beverly Hills mansion, surrounded by a cadre of female warriors and Illyria, too. But it wasn't always so easy for him.
Spike: After the Fall tells the tale of what happened in the intervening months since that alleyway cataclsym. Along for the ride in this series are Illyria, who has a tendency to revert back to Fred at inopportune times, as well as Angel's Dragon, and a new cast of characters as well. Most importantly, the series introduces a character who will come to be see as Spike¹s arch-nemesis. Even more than Angel.

I haven't seen the movie yet but liked the comic adaptation. The story is interesting although quite early I guessed that Matt is actually Indi Jr.. Why do I get the impression that Matt was introduced for future sequells when Harrison Ford will decide that he is too old for the role ???

The art is bright and good too. I'm looking forward for the new Indi comics.

I enjoyed this 2nd story arc of the Dark Times series less then the 1st story arc. Maybe because of the dark art that made it hard to dechiper what's happening, esp. when a blue/green creature is painted in a blue/green background. Maybe because there was no mention of Lord Vader or Palpatine. Or maybe because the annoying tendancy of the Jedi master to see himself as a monster when all he did was protect the innocent. He didn't use the force to get more power like Anakin did so I don't see why he has to worry about going to the dark side.

Brandon Jerwa is returning to Highlander for an oversized two-parter early next year.
Barrucci is targeting October 2009 for an ongoing Highlander.

There is also some mentioning a Blackbeard comics. I'm not holding my breath whne it comes to Dynamite announcements. Their track record is bad.

Updated 2.6.08 - According to an interview with writer Brandon Jarwa the new Highlander mini series will tell the history of the Krugen prior to the 1st Highlander movie. I'm not very excited because I prefer Duncan.

This is the 1st time since I got into the comics world almost 2 years ago that the solicitaions are soooo disappointing. On one hand they included new Doctor Who, Flash Gordon and X-Files series. But on the other hand only 2 itmes each from Dynamite, Marvel Illustrated and Star Trek and nothing from Dresden Files, Stargate and The Godfather, not to mention all the other Dynamite titles that were put on hold ages ago. GRRRRR

Star Wars: Dark Times #1-5 - The Path to Nowhere

The 1st issue of Star Wars: Dark Times, Vector story is about to arrive in this week's shipment, so I decided that it's time to start reading this series. I'm not as versed in the Star Wars universe as I am in the Star Trek and Stargate universes, but I enjoy it anyway.

The 1st story arc - The path to nowhere is great and I'm very happy that I "gave in" and started reading Star Wars comics. The story is very touching and the fact that the Jedi didn't manage to save the youngling made it different.

I don't understand why killing the slaver means that the Jedi strayed from the Jedi path. Also I have a problem with the portrayal of Lord Vader. The writer goes out of his way to show that there is more of Anakin Skywaklker in Vader then was shown in movies 4-6.

WOW !!! The KotOR part of Vector is great. The story is very interesting. It also hints at how the Vetor story can span all 4 current Star Wars series and eras. My guess is that the common factor is Celest in that Sith box that can keep her alive for eternity. This way the story can move from era to era. Can't wait to read Dark Times part and KotOR #29 to see what happen next, both in Zane Carrick and Celest stories.

The art is great and annoying at the same time. The panels are very clear and it's easy to see what's happeneing. But the faces are annoying. The artist use the same approach to sketching faces as Flash Gordon's artist and sketch weird faces. At least the proportion between body and face is good unlike in the Flash Gordon comics.

Another very cool Doctor Who story. The art and new coloring is just great. What bothered me in the story is how the Doctor was portrayed as kind of dumb. One would have thought that the Tardis's data banks have info all on the races in the universe, so the Doctor shouldn't have been taken in by the Meep's act. And it took the Doctor too long to realize that he has a bomb in his tummy.

Kudos to IDW for coloring and re-printing these old Doctor Who comics. I'm looking forward to see what they'll do with old Star Trek comics.

John Byrne has announced the title of his forthcoming Romulan miniseries sequel to his Romulan issue in the first Alien Spotlight series. The series is "Star Trek Romulans: The Hollow Crown" and starts in September. Mr. Byrne also hinted that there will be more Romulans mini series.

Great CSI mystery. I realised who the killer is only in the last pages. Loved all the bio details about Jack the Ripper. The penciled art is great and so are the likemesses. On the other hand Ashley Wood's pained art is horrible as usual. It's very hard to dechiper what's going on the in flashbacks cos of it.

The 1st ever issue from a new publisher is always a risk. I liked it a lot. The story is very short - only 10 pages. No Flesh Gordon in it, only Ming doing his worst. But I liked it. The art is a bit weird due to disproportion in the way characters were drawn, as can be seen in the cover. Small ellogonated heads / faces in contrast to very muscular upper torsos. I'm lookign forward to issue #1 abd hopefully Flash's appearance.

Though “Temple of Doom” was the second film in the Indy film franchise, the film was set in 1935, a year before the events of the inaugural “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Illustrated by Steve Scott with covers by Tony Harris, “Tomb of the Gods” is set sometime in between those two films. “It's an interesting time in Indy's development,” Rob Williams told CBR News. “One of the things we talked about from the offset is the dichotomy in Indy's character between ‘Temple’ - where his mantra is ‘Fortune And Glory’ - and ‘Raiders,’ where it's ‘That Belongs In A Museum.’”
In a pivotal scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Indy’s rival, Belloq, along with a caravan of Nazis, transports the Ark of the Covenant through a desert pass before our titular hero levels a bazooka at their cargo and threatens to blow it to kingdom come. But Belloq calls Indy’s bluff, knowing Jones’ intellectual curiosity would not allow him to lose the secrets of the Ark to to history.
“In ‘Tomb of the Gods,’ Indy’s not yet at the point in his life where he'll lower the bazooka and let Belloq have the Ark,” Williams said. “The younger, more driven Indy wouldn't do that.” Williams believes it is Indy’s newfound humility that saves his life at the end of “Raiders,” when he chooses to close his eyes rather than gaze upon the contents of the Ark. “Our story is another part of Indy's development on the way to ‘Raiders.’”
“We wanted to make the stakes huge, so it's something that could put the entire human race in peril, along with Indy's soul,” Williams said. “There's a MacGuffin - something that could mean that everything Indy has studied all these years is a lie - a chase across the globe, and, eventually, a major revelation. You'll have to read the series to see just what Indy's looking for. But it's something that goes to the very heart of who Indy is.”
Parts of the story are based on actual events. “There's a factual basis behind our inciting incident - an occurrence that did actually happen, and the evidence for it can still be seen today. But we're also adding in some aspects that are an homage to the writings of a certain author.”
At least one member of Indy’s supporting cast features prominently in “Tomb of the Gods” -- Marcus Brody, Jones’ colleague and occasional benefactor. In the films, Brody was played by Denholm Elliott, and Williams was brimming over with praise for the accomplished actor. “Denholm Elliott is superb in ‘Raiders’ and ‘Last Crusade.’ He's probably the best thing in ‘Last Crusade,’ actually. So, he's too good a character not to have along for the ride.” Whether or not fans can expect to see any other familiar faces from the Indy films remains to be seen.arts of the story are based on actual events. “There's a factual basis behind our inciting incident - an occurrence that did actually happen, and the evidence for it can still be seen today. For “Tomb of the Gods,” Williams made the conscious decision to introduce a number of expanded universe characters into the mix, if for no other reason than to have a supporting cast that he could put in real peril. “Even if you know Indy's going to make it out okay, you don't know if they will,” Williams said. “Also, recurring expanded universe characters help us give this run a distinct personality of its own.”
The series once again pits Henry Jones, Jr. against Hitler’s Third Reich, but Williams told CBR News that Indy’s adversaries in “Tomb of the Gods” aren’t just any Nazis. Indy crosses paths with the Ahnenerbe, a real-life section of the SS started by Heinrich Himmler in 1935. “The Ahnenerbe was the ancestral heritage branch of the SS, dedicated to archaeology surrounding the superiority of the Aryan race and the occult.,” Williams said. “This is, to all extent and purposes, Hitler's private team of Ghostbusters. I felt that was a pretty cool angle. So it's not just Indy verses your typical Nazi goons, it's Indy up against his counterparts from within the Nazi party.”

An Indiana Jones expanded univers is a great idea. Dark Horse's Star Wars expanded universe is great and so is Pocket Books Star Trek expanded universe. Can't wait to start reading !!!

Even though this is my and Franco's third SPIKE series, there are no appearances from Beck or Betta George or Tok or even Trots the Evil Horse Puppet. George premiered in SPIKE:ASYLUM # 2 and then came back to life in SPIKE:SHADOW PUPPETS #2, so it would have been nice to have him appear, however briefly, in SPIKE:ATF # 2, but the story is king and the fish had no place.I miss Beck and Tok and Mosaic. I think I'll visit them again, AATF.

Cool, there are going to be more Spike comics.

Illyria is a full-on supporting character in this, and we deal with her current situation. However, if you don't SPIKE:ATF you'll still understand what's going on with her in ANGEL:ATF. And vice versa, actually. Illyria isn't the only character from the ANGEL TV show that makes an appearance.
Gunn is not the villain in SPIKE:ATF. The villain in SPIKE:ATF would make Gunn wet his pants.

Sounds good !!! Also I;m crossing my fingers that the older Spike comics will be re-printed by IDW in the smaller & cheaper version, or they'll appear in a bargain bin somewhere :)

Funny, just as I finished reading the latest story arc, Markosia decided to announce a new story arc. From CBR:

AAM/Markosia, announce "Triple Threat", the biggest event ever in the Starship Troopers ongoing series.
Three stories, linked over two parts by writer Cy Dethan, with guest writers Tony Lee (Doctor Who) and Christian Beranek (Willow Creek), and guest artists Neil Edwards, Scott James and Jim Boswell. It's the Vandals versus the Tigers in a race to save the federation against the Civilian Militia -- but who are the Reaper Cell and what is their connection to SICON?
I had a blast helping define a new element in the ST universe: the psychics! Expect some mental carnage, for sure.
Starship Troopers: Triple Threat runs in issues 9 and 10. The first part will be out in July, with the conclusion following in August.

As I said while reviewing Bad Blood, I'm looking forward to this new story. I just hope that 2 issues is long enough to really develop the story, and that the art will be better then in Bad Blood.

This story arc does not continue the adventures of the Tanner Tigers. Instead it introduce a new MI squad "the Vandals" and a new alien enemy. The story is good. The alien enemy is actually another technological advanced race who hate the bugs as much as the humans does. But instead of joining forces they fight each other. The arc ends with the aliens withrawing after a change of leadership leaving the humans to deal with the bugs.

The art isn't good. The drawings themsleves are beautiful but hard to dechiper what's going on. Esp. due to the nonchrom coloring. Everything is either grey tinted or green tinted.

I enjoyed the story and looking forward to the next installment esp. since it has Tony Lee, who wrote all the other story arcs, as guest writer. I do hope that the art and coloring will be better.
