More on the new Flash Gordon comics

From an interview with writer Brendan Deneen:
  • The first arc is more-or-less our “origin story” for Flash, the supporting characters, and Mongo. All of the classic elements are there… Flash, Dale and Dr. Zarkov are transported to the fantastical world of Mongo, which is ruled by the intelligent and evil Ming, although a number of factions are seeking to overthrow him. However, there are some significant changes as well. Ming’s beautiful daughter, Princess Aura, was recently killed by Arborian Rangers; Prince Barin is a rebel who’s been exiled to Frigia, an arctic wasteland on the outskirts of Mongo; and our three main heroes (Flash, Dale and Zarkov) are separated pretty much immediately after their arrival on this strange planet. All of the characters’ divergent storylines will thread through one another’s until they’re finally all reunited at the end of the first arc. I promise a lot of twists and turns, and a couple of surprises as well.
  • In keeping with the spirit of the original comic strip, in which Flash was a professional polo player, I’ve made the new version of the character a former Olympic athlete. Also, in the very first strip from the 1930s, it’s mentioned that Flash is a Yale graduate, so I’ve actually made him a Professor of Political History & Theory at Yale University (and he also coaches the polo team there). In this new version, Dale Arden is a CIA Agent, and that’s how she and Flash know each other. They met and fell in love while in training to join the Company but Flash either quit or was kicked out before he became an Agent (it depends if you ask Flash or Dale about the truth behind him leaving!). He decided to segue into academia but he still has a taste for adventure. Dr. Hans Zarkov was a friend of Flash’s but Zarkov seemingly began to lose his mind, spiraling into paranoia, and vanished years ago. As for Ming, in my version he’s actually called “Ming the Merciful” and sees himself (or at least presents himself) as a benevolent dictator who is constantly being attacked by insurgents. His relationship with Dale will actually play on that theme as he attempts to seduce her, since both her beauty and her CIA skills appeal to Ming. However, his true colors will surface soon enough. Meanwhile, Flash will be holed up with the rebels, and his knowledge of military tactics will come into play when they take the fight to Ming. There are also a number of cool Mongon characters and species, some of which will be familiar to fans of the 1980 film, and also many others inspired by the original comic strip.

I never seen the original comic strip or any other Flash Gordon but this is getting more and more interesting.

Doctor Who #1

I couldn't resist and already read Doctor Who #1 that arrived today. Loved every minute of it. It's like a short eppisode of Docrtor Who. The art is bright and great. The only gripe I have with it is the Doctor's hair color. On my screen he has brown hair not blonde. Can't wait for issue #2 that hopefully will arrive in 2 weeks to see what's wrong with the London the arrived at.

Star Wars: Infinities - A New Hope

The Star Wars: Infinities series are based on a cool idea: take a Star Wars movie story, change one of the events and watch how everything that happened after that event change and the whole story goes to different direction then the movie.
The 1st Infinities story I read was "The return of the Jedi". It was a long while ago so I don't recall the story except for the changed event had to to do with something happening to the golden robot. I do recall that I enjoyed it immensly and was looking forward to getting my hands on other Infinities books.
Last evening I finished reading the Infinities version of "A new hope" and was very disappointed. The start was very promising. The changed event was Luke's missiles detonating ahead of the their target and thus not destroying the death star. The result was the end of the rebellion and Princess Leia becoming part of the Empire's elite. But then it all went wrong. Luke went to Yoda's planet where he trained to become a Jedi, Han Solo arrives and tell him that Leia is alive, Yoda tells Luke that Lord Vader is actually Anakin Skywalker - his father and Leia is his twin sister, Luke goes to the rescue, Anakin awakens inside Vader, saves his children kill the Emperor and dies, and the empire ends. The story ends with Luke looking at the ghosts of Anakin, Yoda and Obi Wan. Sounds familier ??? Of course it does because it's the story of the "Return of the Jedi" movie. So at the end the changed event didn't affect the outcome, only the way to it. As I said - disappointing.

Indiana Jones news

From this weekend Wondercon:
  • Dark Horse will be doing new Indiana Jones comics starting in June entitled Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods, along with the film adaptation coming in May.

Another future addition to my collection :)

IDW's solicitations for May

Unlike Dabel Brothers, IDW has a lot to offer in May:

  • Star Trek: Assignment Earth #1
  • Star Trek: Year four - The Enterprise Experiment #2
  • Star Trek: New Frontier #3
  • Star Trek TNG: Intelligence Gathering #5
  • Angel: After the Fall #7
  • Doctor Who #5
  • Doctor Who Classics #6
  • CSI: Demon Hoise TP

I'll be very surprised if IDW will manage to publish all of that in a month.

Dabel Brothers solictations for May

May will bring only 1 addition to my collection from Dabel Brothers:

  • The Dresden Files #2

Zorro #1

Usually I don't read every issue seperately, and prefer to wait till I have a complete story arc. But after a year long wait since Dynamite 1st announced the Zorro comics, I couldn't resist and loved eveyr page of it. The art is good except for the kids panels that are less detailed then the rest. So far the story is interesting. Starting with Zorro's past and explaing how and why he became Zorro, is a wonderful idea. I know the story of Zorro, but not much about who he really was. The 1st issue helped a lot to get me into the story. Now I'mm looking forward to issue #2.

February 08 - 3rd shipment

Ferbruary's 3rd shipment added 5 items to my collection:
Angel: Afther the Fall #4

Battlestar Galctica: Origins #3 - Baltar 3

The Iliad #3

Star Wars: Dark Times #9 - Parallels 4

Zorro #1

Marvel solicitations for May

Marvel released their May solicitations. There are going to be 3 new items for me:
  • Moby Dick #4
  • The Iliad #6
  • The picture of Dorian Gray #6

BTW - This week shipment already arrived at CNV and 5 issues are waiting for me. More on that tomorrow when I'll get them.

Star Trek TNG: Intelligence Gathering #2

Just finished reading issue #2 that was supposed to be the 2nd part of the story, and I don;t understand why the issue #1 ended with "to be continued", since issue #2 tells a totally different story then issue #1. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't bother to explain how the Romulans got into the Federations' secured facility.
Anyhow, I loved the story in issue #2. The art was great, esp. the panel with the interiors of the Regillian facility's interior. I'm really looking forward to issue #3.

Star Trek TNG - Intelligence Gathering #1

This is the 1st part of a 2 issues story, but it's so complete that it can also be considered as a standalone.
The story is great and yet again proves that you can compress a complete and well rounded story with lots of action into a 22 pages comic book. The art is good. I'm refraining from grading it as great because it's inconsistent. In some of the panels the likeness is very good to perfect and in others I had to resort to shirt's colors and beards to know who is who. Haven't read the 2nd part yet, and am hoping that it will tell how the Rumulans managed to get into that secured Federation installation.

New Flash Gordon comics

From Newsarama:
  • Ardden Entertainment, jointly owned by Rich Emms (previously EiC at Markosia) and Brendan Deneen, has landed the rights to Flash Gordon. The deal will see Ardden bringing the popular science fiction property to comic books once again with new adventures. The first issue is scheduled to be in stores in July or August, “with issues shipping monthly via Diamond, and then with the Annual to coincide for Flash’s anniversary in January 2009 and the first hardcover TPB - with bonus materials - in shops a month after.

This sounds interesting and I'm going to consider it as a possible addition to my reading list.

February 08 - 2nd shipment

Weekly shpments are great. The 2nd shipment for February arrived today and included only 2 items for me:
Doctor Who Classics #3

Star Trek TNG: Intelligence Gathering #2

Dark Horse solicitations for May

  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #29
  • Star Wars: Legacy #24
  • Star Wars: Rebellion #14

Angel: After the fall news

The 1st story arc ends in issue #5. That means that I have to wait for 2 more issues till I can read the story. Then come issues #6-8 which will be a three-part story: "First Night." This is an array of short stories, all handled by different artists and each one finally revealing what these characters the night of the big, apocalyptic fight in the alley at the conclusion of Angel Season 5. Issue #9 should start a new story arc that will continue the story that ends in issue #5.
This is a bit confusing. Why not take a break from the ongoing series, publish the Angel: First night as an independent mini series and then resune the ongoing series with issue #6 ???

Doctor Who news

Tony Lee posted on CBR's forum that he is writing a six part arc / mini / Internet splitting extravaganza called DOCTOR WHO: THE FORGOTTEN. It stars the Tenth Doctor and Martha, is set before the end of season three and involves more than one Doctor. The 1st issue is supposed to be released in July.

Painkiller Jane is an ongoing series

Right now, Painkiller Jane is in the middle of a crossover story with Terminator 2. In a recent interview, when asked what will hapen with the series after the end of the crossover, writer Jimmy Palmiotti said:
  • It’s an ongoing story and the events here are another chapter in Jane’s life. This is not a throw-away crossover. It takes place in real time with the series and I will continue the book for as long as the fans keep buying it.
